ALADIN AND THE ENCHANTED LAMP

When he rubs the lamp, smoke comes out of it, and then out of the smoke comes a magical jinnee (genie). With the jinnee's help, Aladdin is soon rich, with gold and jewels and many fine things. DOM'S DRAGON

MacMillan Children's Reader is a series of short story books for children learning English, bringing together a variety of enjoyable fiction and non-fiction titles. The series provides reinforcement of the basic structures and vocabulary contained in most major primary courses.

The chosen book is perfect for 5 to 7 year olds (beginers of English learning).

«Dom's Dragon» tells the story of a very creative boy than on a very rainy day makes his own dragon using only things he has in his bedroom! Parts of the body, colours and numbers are some of the vocabulary explored.

THANKSGIVING DAY

Today, November 24th, we celebrated Thanksgiving Day at our school.

The 5th graders learnt about the origin of this holiday by watching a cartoon video of CHarlie Brown. This film tells of the History of the first pilgrims that sailed in the Mayflower, their journey and challenges in the «new world».

The 6th graders remembered the importance of this special day and build thanking posters, begining with the sentence «I'm thankful for...».

The whole school was delighted with our lunch menu; turkey with vegetables, roast potatoes and chestnuts, vegetable soup and pumpkin pie hummmmm :)

«Robin Hood» by Express Publishing and «Pip the Pirate» by Macmillan - both available in our library.

These two stories will be told to our young primary students this November by teacher Carla Seabra.

5th and 6th graders celebrated HALLOWEEN

Last Monday, we celebrated Halloween at our school.
English lessons were prepared to create a scary mood with the film «Scared Shreckless» - viewed completely in English.

The complete history and traditions of this special day were shared in a powerpoint presentation (on the school's educational platform).
At the end of the day, our young trick-or-treaters went to the Halloween disco, promoted by our senior students.

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world" (L. Wittgenstein)

I don't totally agree with this statement. Our language is something that allows us to communicate and change ideas although ever since our ancient years we have been able to communicate with people that don't even know our language. We didn't all speak the same language when human kind was born, and still, as we see nowadays, the world doesn't have limits and everyone is able to live wherever they want to without having to mind the language.

Some cultures have specific words that might be complicated to be understood by us. These cultures are examples of what limits can mean, even though we might not understand them.

The limits of the world are inside us, it all depends on how we feel, an on how we want to face the world. It all depends whether we want to be open or not in order to expand our own world.

From other perspective, our language can be used as a tool to expand our world. But it can also, in some ways, limit it. Our dreams are an example of that limitation. If you find yourself thinking about dreams, in the end you will probably reach the simple conclusion that we can only dream what we know.

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES - September 26th

At the initiative of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September.

Throughout Europe, 800 million Europeans represented in the Council of Europe's 47 member states are encouraged to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school. Being convinced that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent, the Council of Europe promotes plurilingualism in the whole of Europe.

At our school we also had the opportunity to develop many different activities which gave students a chance to put themselves to the test by using a foreign language, as well as involving the whole school community.

We all had a lot of fun and learnt new things!

BOOK OF THE MONTH: September 2011

First of all: welcome back! Have a great school year.

Every month you can find here a suggestion of an Eglish written book.

This September choice is Goldilocks and the Three Bears, available (two copies) in our school's library.

This fairy tale first recorded in narrative form by British author and poet Rober Southey is retold by Sue Arengo in a short version for the primary students.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is about a little girl who wanders into the household of a family of bears while they are out for a walk. She eats their porridge, tests out their chairs and falls asleep in the little bears bed before they return home. When they discover her in their home, they wake her up and must decide whether or not to kill her or let her go. The story is great for teaching children to respect other peoples property.

PRACTICE or PRACTISE???

In many parts of the English speaking world (UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and South Africa) “practice” is the noun, “practise” the verb.

However, in the U.S.A the spelling “practice” is more often used for both the noun and the verb. Contrary to popular belief a significant minority of the American population also observe the distinction. If you are not sure about what a verb or noun is, it might be safer to just use the spelling "practice", as many Americans do!

However, the English learnt in Portuguese schools is the British, so you should better follow the rule :)

Everyday we listen to songs in English. Why can't we use them to explore vocabulary and learn grammar? Our students find it more interesting than reading a plain text from the book...

La pintora Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón nació el 6 de julio de 1907 en Coyoacán, cerca de la ciudad de México.

Su vida fue muy desgraciada y estuvo marcada por una serie de enfermedades, accidentes, lesiones y operaciones.

En 1913, con seis años, Frida contrajo la polio y, cuando tenía 18 años, tuvo un grave accidente: el autobús en el que viajaba chocó con un tranvía y el pasamano del autobús atravesó su espalda, fue a través de su pelvis y se fue a su vagina. Este accidente le causó daños irreparables en su columna vertebral, además de otros graves problemas de salud a lo largo de toda su vida.

A causa de esta tragedia, hizo varias cirugías y estuvo postrada en la cama durante mucho tiempo. Durante su larga convalecencia empezó a pintar con una caja de pinturas que le ofreció su padre.

A los 21 años se casó con el pintor Diego Rivera, con el que tuvo un matrimonio tormentoso, ya que ambos tenían relaciones extramatrimoniales y temperamentos fuertes.

Vivieron juntos en Estados Unidos, donde Frida sufrió uno de sus primeros abortos.

Volvieron a México y ahí se separaron temporariamente porque Kahlo descubrió que él la había traicionado con su hermana Cristina.

Más tarde, la pintora abrigó en la casa de sus padres al político León Trotsky con quien tuvo un romance.

Fue muy admirada y respetada por grandes pintores como Picasso o Breton y, por eso, expuso, en 1939, muchos de sus cuadros en Paris, la capital de la cultura europea, alcanzando la fama por todo el mundo.

Sin embargo, solo en 1954, tras la amputación de una de sus piernas, debido a una infección de gangrena, consiguió una primera exposición en su país natal. Poco tiempo después, en el mismo año, con 47 años, murió a causa de una embolia pulmonar.

La última entrada en su diario, que dice: "Espero que mi partida será feliz, y espero no volver jamás - Frida".

Frida se quedó marcada por su vida desgraciada y se quedó conocida por una grande pintora y sus cuadros se han llegado a valorar hasta en 1.5 millones de euros.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE FACTS

Why is the letter «K» silent in some words?

Back in the days when Old English was spoken, the "k" in these sorts of words was not silent, so they would be pronounced as k'nife, k'night, and so on. This pronunciation was even common in the time of William Shakespeare! At some point, people decided that this sort of articulation was too cumbersome, so they stopped voicing the beginning consonant! The same thing happened with "gn" words such as gnome and gnarled. However, other Germanic languages such as German, Swedish, and Dutch kept the "k" and still pronounce it to this day.

This phenomenon occurred with other consonant clusters too. Would you believe that the word 'ring' used to be spelled 'h-r-i-n-g'? Once enunciation of the beginning consonant was ceased, the spelling was changed altogether! This also happened with words like hlud (loud), hnutu (nut), and hwenne (when). Even so, this sort of spelling alteration could not occur for words like knight and know, because then you would never be able to distinguish them from "night" and "now"!

A PORTUGUESE ROCKIN' IN LONDON

It is truly a pride to have a Portuguese playing the lead role in such an important show.

From the 5th to the 7th years, these students are ready to experience the true British way of life.

We will all be staying at Palmer's Lodge, a lovely warm hostel in the centre of London.

Our tour includes many extraordinary places such as: Kesington Hight Street, Science Museum, Buckingham Palace, St James Park, Green Park, Westminster, boat trip to Tower Pier, guided tour to the Tower of London, Camden Lock street market, British Museum, Picadilly Area, London's West End, Waterloo Bridge and Madame Tussaud's.

Do you know what they are singing about? Not always, right?
You can learn a lot from music. Learning can be fun if you use your imagination.
If you have a favourite song, look for the lyrics and try to learn them. If you are going to sing it, so sing it well. If you find words that you don't understand, go and look them up in the dictionary.

Comenius Project helps develop language skills

From 17th to 21st January 2011, Poland, Italy and France met in Portugal for their first Comenius meeting with students. A group of thirty 12 year-olds and 10 teachers from the four countries worked together.

The aims of the meeting were to:

- share and compare the questionnaires’ results on a Powerpoint presentation;

- show the photos of the Comenius tree plantation;

- present the mascots;

- exhibit the posters about recycling.

Each student was hosted by a very friendly Portuguese family, thus discovering their way of life and practising their English. At first, the students were nervous but they quickly adapted to these new circumstances (lessons, playground, meals…) and also made new friends.

The Comenius group visited the school first and also the surroundings. Teachers attended lessons (English, French, technology, 5-year olds). All the people involved (parents, students, teachers and principals) took part in a warm welcome dinner on Tuesday in the canteen. The Portuguese principal introduced the aim of the project and the purpose of the visit to the families.

This was the first step for the students to discover the meaning of being European citizens, open to a sustainable and cooperative lifestyle. It also opened the teachers’ minds to a different way of teaching, planning, organization in general and different teacher-student relationships.

Finally, we prepared for the next meeting in Italy in May 2011.

Saying goodbye was no easy job for the students that bonded so well and fast. There were tears, hugs and promises to keep in touch which I am sure they will keep. All the participant students are eager to go on the next visit to Italy, but we can only take 5 students each time – fortunately we will have more mobilities!

For now, we have to start preparing for the next meeting in May. For this, 7th graders can join the Comenius Club and help make a tv spot about renewable energies and a solar car to take to Italy.

Extensive Reading in the 6th Grade

The 6th graders started this second term studying the amazing work of art «The Elephant Man».
Sure it is a shorter simpler version of the original but it has captured the students from the start!

Now that we are almost finishing working on the book, I strongly recommend watching the 1980 American drama film based on the true story of Joseph Merrick.

The Elephant Man is (called John Merrick in the film) a severely deformed man in 19th century London. The film was directed by David Lynch and stars John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon, and Freddie Jones.

The screenplay was adapted by Lynch, Christopher De Vore, and Eric Bergren from the books The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences (1923) by Sir Frederick Treves and The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity by Ashley Montagu. It was shot in black-and-white.
The Elephant Man was recognized as a critical and commercial success, and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture in 1981.

A Day with a Special Guest

Last Monday, on the 11th October, the 11th grade had a different class. It was with great pleasure that we received an American teacher, named Sara Roffino. She came to talk to us about her life as a student and her life experiences in other countries.

She was born and raised in New York, United States of America. There she began her educational life, and later she moved to Ohio to study arts in a university. She said she enjoyed her life, living with other students in the campus. Then, she used this situation to talk about how her life changed; she explained how she began to be more independent and responsible.

Afterwards, she explained how the educational system in America worked and how it’s easy to change your major subject in the middle of one’s university studies. She herself started in arts and later changed to another field on teaching. She continued her educational life in other countries, like Costa Rica, Brazil (where she had her first contact with the Portuguese language, because she lived during six months with a Brazilian family), Spain and Portugal, where she’s currently staying. She has been here since last year both as a student and a teacher.

She explained to us how useful it was for her to know English, which gave her a huge advantage. She said that learning the official language of each country helped her learning and understanding their culture. At the end of this outstanding experience, the students asked her some questions regarding the educational system in other countries and how it was to study abroad. She also shared with us that life in general is faster in the USA and that people don’t have as much free time as Portuguese do, and that students in the States generally read and write much more.

Pequenas equipas de alunos formaram «patrulhas» de Inglês (6ºano), Francês e Espanhol (7ºano) para testar os conhecimentos de colegas, professores e funcionários quanto aos seus conhecimentos nestas áreas.
Sempre que o inquirido respondesse correctamente a uma questão - no caso do inglês e francês - ou acertasse no significado de uma palavra em espanhol, ser-lhe-ia atribuído um ponto que, muito embora fosse somente simbólico, encorajou muitos alunos a tentar angariar mais e mais pontos.
Foi uma actividade de sucesso e, a julgar pelo número de pontos dados, estamos numa escola verdadeiramente multilinguística!

5TH GRADERS SING IN 5 LANGUAGES!

Students from the 4 classes of the 5th year sang songs in 5 languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian and French. Not only they became in contact with different and unknown languages through music but they also learnt more about these countries' culture. The songs were not modern, they are great hits from each country that talk about the people, famous places and way of life. The 5th graders had a lot of fun and were happy to see that some words are similar in different languages!
The list of songs chosen are:
- «99 Luftballoons» (German)
- «Yellow Submarine» (English)
- «La Bamba» (Spanish)
- «l'italiano» (Italian)
- «Les Champs Elysées» (French)

6th GRADERS CUTTING JOB ADS

Last week, students have been planning and preparing activities for the European Day of Languages.
In the 6th grade, they were challenged to find and cut job ads from Portuguese newspapers that mencioned speaking a foreign language as a requirement. They had fun and found out that this was not a difficult task at all... Nowadays most jobs require a foreign language! The students were amazed: waiter, secretary, accountant, any kind of job! Then they built posters and disclosed them throughout the school.
But this is not the only activity being performed by the 6th graders, on Monday they will be the English Patrol. Wait for it...

DIA EUROPEU DAS LÍNGUAS 2010

Celebrado a 26 de Setembro desde que foi declarado por iniciativa do conselho da Europa, este ano o Colégio comemora este dia especial no dia 27 de Setembro com variadíssimas actividades dinamizadas pelo Departamento de Línguas Estrangeiras.
Ao longo do dia não faltarão músicas em diferentes línguas, exposições de trabalhos alusivos à Europa, contar-se-ão histórias tradicionais ao 1ºciclo, os alunos poderão explorar autores europeus e respectivas obras, aprenderão mais acerca de programas de mobilidade de estudantes na Europa, entre outros. Ao almoço será servida uma ementa especial proveniente de França, Espanha e Reino Unido, que será degustada num refeitório decorado para a ocasião!

Este ano lectivo, o departamento de línguas estrangeiras surge enriquecido com duas novidades: o inglês nos 5 anos e o espanhol (opcional) no 7º ano! É uma nova etapa que se inicia com grande entusiasmo já evidenciado por parte de alunos e professoras.

No segundo período realizar-se-á a primeira viagem-curso a Londres (de 9 a 12 de Março). Com 30 inscrições limitadas aos alunos do 4º ao 7º anos, aguardar-se em breve o envio de mais informações para os Exmos. Encarregados de Educação. A curiosidade e interesse demonstrados pelos alunos faz crer que será uma actividade de grande sucesso.

La campagne sur les Champs-Elysées

Last friday was held the third edition of the Speling Competition.

The teachers congratulate all that made to the final!

The winners were:

2nd LEVEL (5th and 6th years) - Bernardo Baldaia

3rd LEVEL (7th-9th years) - João Bernardo

All students received participation certificates and the three winners got an ice cream voucher and a Special Certificate!

What a Great Way to Say Goodbye!

Our wonderful week ended the best way: the English and French teachers surprised the 3rd and 4th year students. At the end of the school day, they went to the gym to watch a play performed by these teachers. The play was based on a dialogue from their school book «Fairyland» so they all could be familiarised with the characters: Erlina, Alvin, Harry, Mona and Lee.

We made SCONES!... ...and ate them all

The second cooking lesson was another big success!

This time our little cooks made English Scones. There were about 30 students but everything went great and the scones turned out delicious...

Here is the recipe in Portuguese:

280 gramas de farinha
50 gramas de açúcar
75 gramas de manteiga
2 colheres de chá de fermento
1 ovo
6 colheres de sopa de leite
uma pitada de sal

Deite a farinha, o açúcar, o fermento e a pitada de sal numa tigela e misture. Junte a manteiga em pedacinho (à temperatura ambiente) e amasse com as pontas dos dedos sem bater muito e por fim junte o ovo e o leite. Molde pequenos bolinhos e ponha em tabuleiros untados com manteiga e polvilhados com farinha. Leve ao forno a 190 graus entre 10 a 15 minutos. Sirva ainda quentes com manteiga ou doce.

As we promised, here is the recipe for «crêpes». It is is Portuguese so your family and friends can all understand and do it at home.

Comme promis, voici la recette des crêpes. C'est en Portugais pour que tous à la maison puissent la réaliser.

250 gramas de farinha
4 ovos
3 colheres de sopa de óleo
1/2 litro de leite
uma pitada de sal

Deite a farinha numa tigela e junte uma pitada de sal. Deite os ovos inteiros na tigela e junte o leite lentamente mexendo sempre com uma vara de arames até obter uma mistura homogénea não muito grossa. Por fim, junte o óleo batendo sempre. Deixe repousar cerca de meia hora. Aqueça uma frigideira anti-aderente ao lume bem forte. Deite pequenas porções da mistura preparada e deixe escorrer pela frigideira de forma a esta ficar com o fundo completamente tapado. Vire o crepe e deixe cozer um pouco. Retire e sirva com compota ou chocolate ou, se preferir crepes salgados, sirva com fiambre e queijo, por exemplo.

Foreign Languages Week

These two first days of OUR week have been wonderful.

We started on Monday morning with a sensational show by the Clever Pants group. Students from the 5th to the 9th years had a lot of fun!

During the lunch break we are holding a book sale with French and English books. It has been a success. If you haven't been there please don't forget you can still do it until Thursday.

This afternoon we had the first of two cooking lessons. Today we made (and ate!) «crêpes à la française». It was an amazing experience... The students were having fun, the cooks were happy and the final result was yammmmm :)

Les deux premières journées de NOTRE semaine se sont trés déroulées. Nous avons eu droit à une pièce de théâtre en anglais pour les élèves de 5ème à la 9éme année. Ce fut hilarant!

Nous avons inauguré la foire aux livres pendant les heures de pause-déjeuner. Que de beaux livres! N'oubliez de réserver ou commander!

Pendant l'après-midi de mardi, nous avons pu réaliser notre session culinaire de "Haute-Cuisine": la recette des crêpes! Délicieuses! Miam-miam!
